Last weekend the weather was finally kind to the regulars of the First Draft Choice Sports Pub as they hosted the fifth annual TideWell Hospice Golf Tournament.

Kelly Carr, TideWell community relations coordinator, looked forward to the day. "The tournament has given the hospice so much in the short time we've been working together."

Having been forced to make a hasty retreat from Lake Venice Golf Club the previous week because of rain, many returned Sunday to take part in an event to raise money for a cause close to their hearts.

As Kelly Carr, TideWell's community relations coordinator explained, the pub has been a wonderful benefactor over the years. "It's just the goodwill that amazes me," she said. "Over the years everyone at the pub has been so supportive."

With more than 1,000 people currently benefiting from TideWell's help in Sarasota, Charlotte, DeSoto and Manatee counties, it is no surprise that many people at First Draft, through friends or family, have first-hand knowledge of the work the Hospice has become renowned for.

According to tournament organizer Rick Schember, it is an emotional situation. He understands why people are so eager to help with their time and generosity.

"We're all touched by what TideWell achieves," he said. "I used to laugh at Jerry Lewis when he started to cry during his telethon, but now I understand why he was so emotional. I've had lots of help from people who are regulars at the pub or just someone who's heard about the tournament from other people and simply want to help. It's overwhelming."

And despite the gloomy economy, Schember remained optimistic about this year's fundraising drive. "We have over 100 golfers taking part. The numbers are slightly down since last year, but I'm still happy with the turnout. Even though we had to raise the entry fee by $10, nobody's complained."

Although they raised $9,000 last year, Schember was realistic about the possibility of surpassing that target. "We have the same amount of sponsors as we did last year and I feel everybody's worked hard in the past few months to raise as much as we can. But whatever the amount, we all know TideWell appreciates our efforts."

The owner of First Draft Choice, Eric Borman, agreed.

"Working with TideWell, you meet such courageous, unselfish people. Yes, it's sad at times knowing how ill people are and some do pass, but it's never depressing. Thank goodness the hospice exists to make people's lives so much easier to bear. I hope we can play a small part in making that happen."
